Most people don’t apply enough sunscreen when they apply spray sunscreen. If you are doing the spritz where you lightly spray each limb, it’s not enough. You are supposed to be spraying for at least 5 seconds per adult limb. But don’t do it next to me! And don’t do it next to any fabric, wood finishes, or concrete that you don’t want to stain.

My kids use zealious and solrx lotion for outdoor meets. They both are waterproof for far longer than others we have tried (blue lizard, sunbum) and easy to apply.

Everyone should absolutely use sunscreen when exposure is inevitable. However, normal sunscreen is not terrible. You apply it as if applying lotion. ALL of it goes on your skin and protects you. Its not difficult. Hack: Use latex (or similar) gloves to apply. It will spread better and no mess on your hands but this is a minor thing. I'd bet 80% of spray sunscreen is wasted by blowing away or hitting something besides your skin. The cost per square foot of skin protected has to be 20x compared to typical sunscreen.

Even better hack is to wear a hat, swim shirt etc when possible. But lotion is way, way better than spray.

Spray sunscreen is an absolute scam imo.

Most of what is sprayed goes floating away on the breeze and does no good to anyone except shareholders.

Same with those "dry" insect repellent sprays. They disappear like a fart in the wind.

My kids' pediatrician reminds us every year to always use waterproof sunscreen but never use the sprays. So bad for your lungs.

It's nuts how many parents spray that on their kids and on themselves right next to other people. Once we had a kid have to leave time trials early because of an asthma flare up because another kid's dad was spraying sunscreen on his kids right next to the asthmatic child.

I don’t like spray either but completely ridiculous to not expect others to use it at an outdoor pool area.

We use SolRX - used by triathletes. It lasts a long time on swimmers.

We use the Neutrogena spray that Costco sells for bodies, and either Neutrogena or Supergoop lotion for faces. My whole family is very fair and extended family has a smattering of skin cancers, so we take it very seriously. We reapply usually every hour. For four of us, we went through 14 cans of spray sunscreen last summer - roughly one a week.

We use cerave (with zinc) for our kids- except for the kid who can’t tolerate the zinc. She uses any of the regular coppertone products. For early morning practice they don’t apply till after, otherwise it’s about every 1.5 hours.

We don’t use sprays because I don’t want that stuff in my kids’ lungs.

I use Blue Lizard SPG 50 Kids/Sport on my kids. We had the lotion last year; I bought a can of spray this year but I imagine we'll go through it quickly so I'll re-buy whatever ended up being easier. Even the most waterproof sunscreens/sunblocks still need to be re-applied every few hours, so pick whichever your kid tolerates. Blue Lizard has never caused my kids' eyes to sting, so that's why I stick with it.

DS's team this year is going to be at an outdoor pool. Any good sunscreens you recommend that are good for sensitive skin but are also actually waterproof? Previous team was indoors except for away meets.
