Are you sure it's competitive tryouts where kids are cut, and not just for placement?

It’s not a hard sport to learn but this having try outs in 3rd grade is so ridiculous. It’s detrimental to kids but a real money maker for adults. It wasn’t that long ago that lacrosse started in middle school, varsity lacrosse was made up of a lot of football players who never played before high school but were natural athletes. It’s like ballet where you have to train daily for years to get to the top. Don’t worry.
They should have teams at local Y type places and park and rec. There is no reason to stress an 8year old kid with a tryout and the result could be that she’s not allowed to play because she doesn’t make the team. .

I would focus on conditioning, speed, hand-eye coordination, and coachability. The lacrosse-specific skills can be easily acquired if you have those foundational things. And the coaches know that.

In your experience, how much skill should a rising 3rd grader have by the time tryouts occur in the fall of 3rd grade? DD is in 2nd grade and has participated in rec lacrosse for three years and has done a few clinics but it seems like she is "behind" in prepping for the tryouts for the town team in 3rd grade? Some people have been all in on lacrosse for years it seems whereas DD has been trying a variety of sports but names lacrosse as her favorite and wants to make the team. Should we go all out in prepping for the tryout or will she be fine?
