When did you get your childs SOL score?

My kids ALWAYS score low on SOLs, despite good class grades and good scores on other tests. Have you ever looked at one of those SOL tests? During covid I worked on the samples for 3rd and 6th grade with my kids and they were not good tests. Poorly worded questions with bad multiple choice options. Or content that they didn't really focus on (rightly) over the year. Sometimes, especially for younger students, they are asked questions in a way they've never seen before and have a hard time reframing concepts they really do understand into a new way of applying them.

I've never put much stock in SOL results, which makes me even more mad that apparently they are going to be part of the grade moving forward. Really bad idea. I think my kids have learned much more from teachers who aren't stuck teaching the literal SOL content than they will learn from teachers who have to get these kids getting good grades on a test that isn't meant to be graded.

My 7th grader scored a 535, which is the lowest she's ever scored on a reading SOL (usually gets almost perfect). She also has a terrible teacher this year, so that probably tracks.

They have read books, but he doesn't actually teach or explain anything he tests on. It's fascinating to watch her try to learn how to guess what answers he is looking for on tests.

Her English grade is a low A-/high B+ and that has been with a lot of work. But it's 7th grade, so I keep telling her not to worry about it. Same goes for the SOL...

There are no vocabulary or grammar lessons. There is an essay or speech each quarter, but it’s very scaffolded with little leeway. No working on analogies, etc. There is little to no feedback on writing. Very poor instruction on how to improve writing. No comments. No working 1-1. No writing and the re-writing. Just a turn-in. Time management is even poor. That’s all problematic in MS.

My kids 8th grade class has been doing vocabulary and grammar all year long. They have been working on root words, prefixes, suffixes and the like. They get comments on their esays, they give feedback to each other on their essays and then revise them. I am not sure what school you are at but our experience at Carson has been very different then what you are describing.

His class read two books in 7th grade.

Anonymous wrote:Yes what is up with the low SOL scores this year? My 8th grader has never gotten a pass proficient in reading since grade 3 and this year they got a 475 and have a 96 in English otherwise.

My 8th grader with a 96% in English scored a 521, what makes you think that there is anything off with the scores? My kids score is inline with his past scores and iReady.
