He should just mail in the form to the IRS, preferrably certified.

He is due a refund--doesn't matter that it is late and there should not be a penalty.

I got my notice my electronic filing was not accepted at 5:00 on April 15. That meant it didn't efile for the two states I file in. Printed the whole thing out and mailed in April 16. (We owed money to the IRS and one state, the other state was a refund.) It has all been processed.

Yes, you can still file a 2025 return and get a refund if one is due.

Early 20’s, first time independent. filed with Free Forms and got confirmation email:

“ Free File Fillable Forms Taxpayer:
Your federal tax return was successfully queued for transmission.

Next steps:
Watch your email. In 24-48 hours, you should receive an email showing whether your filing is accepted or rejected by the IRS.
Your tax return is not complete until it is accepted by the IRS.”

He never got the follow up email and just now told me!

When we went when to free File to check on status, nothing is showing for 2025.

Can he refile even though deadline is past? He was really looking forward to his refund.
