I bet they’d just send all of new Ritchie Park (incl Cold Spring) to Hoover and then RM.

Another reason that they should move Stone Mill back to CJMS. No one needs Hoover with a 3 way split (Wootton, Churchill, and then RM.)

This would make Churchill even more overcrowded. So CSES will be moved to a RM ES. I don’t think Fallsgrove will end up at Lakewood for the same reason (RM will be underutilized--they need Fallsgrove to stay within RM boundaries).

Instead, Fallsmead will join Lakewood. The Rio island, which makes up almost half of Fallsmead ES, will be moved out of Fallsmead (honestly, geographically, this never made sense to begin with). Once Fallsmead joins Lakewood, then Lakewood will be at full capacity. The Rio island could go to either Fields Road or Rosemont…both schools are very close. It may even be split. Rosemont will absolutely articulate more to GHS. If you look at utilization of GHS after the recommendation, GHS will have the second lowest utilization.

Aș for Dufief, because of regional programming and magnet programs disbanding and growth in the area, Crown will be overcrowded unless Dufief is moved to QOHS. This explains the motive behind royally pissing off Brown Station. The writing is on the way. MCPS did it to make room for what they will do during the ES round. Dufief is substantially closer to QOHS as well as QOHS middle school feeders.

Rio makes half of Fallsmead? Are you serious?

Closing Dufief and sending it to QO is tricky. There won't be room in the middle schools as there is now way they are leaving both Ridgeview and Lakelands open at at 50ish% utilization for both.

Maybe Dufief closes but and gets sent to Stone Mill/ Travilah- it would have to be split up as neither school can hold all of Dufief. Less likely for Dufief to be sent elsewhere.

Honestly I'm not so sure Dufief will close- it's had decent amount of renovation lately so not a super low FCI. I think it's more likely Washingtonian Woods gets moved to Dufief to make more room at Fields for the island reassignments.

This makes a lot of sense but I am still a little confused about Fallsmead, can you clarify? The part of Fallsmead that is close to the current Wootton building would get moved to Lakewood (and Fallsmead is closed?) while the current Rio Island winds up at Fields Road? That would make FieldsRoad overcrowded but the parts near 28 could be bumped to Stone Mill or Dufief? Isn't this all the same group of kids they currently have at Wootton/Crown just being shuffled around?

Fallsmead closes as moving their Rio island out would put them significantly underutilized. The Rio island ends up at either Fields Road or Rosemont, or even split between the two. Fields Road will definitely be overcrowded and have to bump kids. Some may end up at QO as I think Dufief is closing too.

I think it’s more likely they reassign people from northern current Fields Road and Rachel Carson to a Gaithersburg HS. RM’s population will be able to bounce back if they reassign King Farm from Washington Grove to College Gardens/RM, which would make room for Fallsgrove to move to Lakewood.

So I think Washington Grove or Rosemont closes and the remaining portion of the one merges into the other.

But we’ll see how they choose to knock things around. Hope by next year there’s slightly more clarity.

Cold Spring has to see this coming, right? As for Dufief, I am not convinced that they will close them. Closing 2 schools in one cluster is ambitious, they have a special program in the school that serves nearby feeder schools (although tbh who knows what the hell they're doing with SPED) and have about 100 extra seats. My hunch is they survive this study.

I think they will be okay. Lakewood is like down the street from them and also on the Parkway either way.
But... Dufief on the other hand... and Cold Spring? They will be far more pissed than anyone else.

Anonymous wrote:Hi everyone,

Writing here because I’d like everyone’s thoughts. I’ve seen a lot of fear-mongering about Fields Road recently, with people suggesting it’s going to bring down the quality of Wootton @ Crown.

I’m writing here now with somewhat of the opposite concern: my worry is that following the next Elementary School study Fields Road could become essentially gentrified and sections of it that are currently less affluent could be reassigned to Summit Hall or another Gaithersburg High ES feeder.

Here’s my reasoning:

Fields Road is already over-crowded, but once Downtown Crown is removed from the Rosemont island, part of it will likely have to move into Fields Road. If that’s the case, they might have to move out the families that live north of Fields Road ES along Muddy Branch Road to make room for newcomers. This is even more likely to be the case if they decide to close to DuFief, as that will require redistricting of DuFief’s current area to a split between Stone Mill, Rachel Carson, and Travilah, which would take up any available space to move Downtown Crown people to Stone Mill as opposed to Fields Road. Lakewood will also not have room if they’re taking on people from Fallsgrove as many think will be the case.

Additional to this is that removing Downtown Crown from Rosemont is going to put pressure to increase the cachement area of Gaithersburg HS elementary schools to keep them open.

And I know some believe some new elementary school is about to be built on Key West Ave but that’s not in the CIP right now so don’t think that’s an out here.

My concern about this has increased seeing how casual and confident MCPS was in screwing over Brown Station last minute. They’re currently acting like Wootton @ Crown is some redistribution - esque event, but with this next study I wonder if they’re just going to essentially find the way of making it revert to being pretty much demographically analogous to how Wootton is now.

I suspect they will move the lower portion of FRES to DuFief to make room for Rosemont Island. I fully believe they will not close DuFief.
