I could not do it with my ex-gf since she was not doing enough in the relationship and always bitter/anger or complained about her being fat or work, etc. I don't care if someone is big but a whiner is such a huge turn-off.

Yes, trust has to be earned; but the first question is why did spouse check out? I would start with a sincere apology and actions that indicate sincerity and improvement. If spouse checked out, what was he/she asking for that you were unwilling/unable to give?

Trust would have to be earned back.

For me my spouse had such terrible anger problems I never felt safe around him again. So to be vulnerable and have or give intimacy was something I physically and mentally could not do with him.
