No, we’re not falling for your “women are crazy” spiel. Even for women struggling in perimenopause. You might want to take a look in the mirror about how entrenched in the patriarchy you are. If these were friends of yours, you should ask them in private how they are and support them.

Do better.

I don’t think it’s misogynistic to acknowledge that the perimenopause years can really deeply affect your mental health.

I agree with you AND you can do that without blasting stories about crazy women and asking innocently if it’s “peri.” This isn’t a conversation. I bet OP is a man.

Do they have spouses and children? Or are they alone in life?

None of my perimenopausal friends are developing these issues. Some are more forgetful than usual. It might be you, OP.

I think the stress of life is making everyone's mental health worse, so whatever your baseline is, it's worse.

So someone who is usually doing well might be experiencing anxiety it depression for the first time, and have no idea how to deal with it.

So someone prone to eating disorders might be relapsing. This deserves empathy.

Someone prone to depression may be having an episode and solutions that worked previously might not be working as well now.

Someone with a personality disorder or psychosis might have a psychotic break that, for instance, leads them to attempt to assassinate a public figure.

I also think many/most people have money anxiety that is compounding these problems by both increasing stress and making them feel they can't afford to seek health. Also I think existing stigmas around having mental illness have worsened recently, this is purely anecdotal but I feel like a few years ago someone saying they struggled with depression would be met with empathy and now less so. There seems to be less empathy everywhere.

This is not unique to women and not caused by menopause. But menopause has real impacts on how women feel and even in brain chemistry, and women have historically been gaslit about these changes. Being made to feel like you are crazy for going through a normal hormonal shift might increase existing paranoia or hypochondriac tendencies.

Be kind. A lot of people are just getting by these days.

Sister in Christ, preach. I have seen my closest friend who swears she's not in peri (she's a few years younger than me) freaking lose her mind, I don't know if it's because she suddenly decided she needed to stop drinking and chomp on edibles (never did any drugs before) and completely forget anything and everything or she's in peri doesn't realize it. But anyway she's turned into quite the nasty itch these days. She's started "fights" literally over nothing too just acting so bizarre. She won't admit she's wrong even when you show her when she said something (cut and pasted her own words). She denies saying things she has said...I could go on...

and it will pass? Or does peri contribute?

One is well educated and smart but so paranoid about being tracked or harassed that she is struggling to function in life. She doesn’t want to apply for jobs because she thinks employers are ‘taking her information’.

Another is high achieving on paper but keeps getting fired from jobs (although she won’t admit it) and judging by her texts and phone calls seems to be drunk and angry every evening, but claims it is physical health related (but mysteriously there is never any diagnosis).

Another is anorexic and keeps falling and breaking bones.

Another keeps getting in trouble for aggressive behavior towards others- a fight with a neighbor over their lawns turns into a war where people are filing protective orders.

Has the world gone insane??
