As a parent with a DD who left TWSB, I can attest that the teaching at TWSB is sub-par. The upper level classes are far too large for the level of instruction and the way in which the school is run lacks professionalism. The fact that performances are optional at the upper division is ridiculous; the casual student and the serious students are expected to learn together, which drags the quality of instruction down. If TWSB wants to be a serious school of ballet, it needs to have a separate track for the more serious study of ballet, rather than lump all the children together.
We live in upper NW DC and would love a solid ballet option that is not in Silver Spring, Rockville, or NoVa. Right now, we commute to one of the ballet studios mentioned here, but would move in a heartbeat if we didn't have to drive 40 minutes every afternoon to get there. If parents work downtown, that is lot of driving, and we are also stuck at the studio for 3 hours. The distance is such that it makes little sense to drive back home. It is a drag to have to trek out to the studio 4, 5, 6 days a week, and to have to hang out in one's car, a cafe, etc., for 3 hours while your kid is in the studio.
Anyway, I'm curious to see if Master Ballet will actually pull this off. I don't see construction starting, and if they want to open in September, they needed to have started a year ago. Also, the space is small. How many studio spaces can they actually put there? They'll need dressing rooms, a costume room, gym equipment, and office, etc. Maybe they should take over the old Amazon Prime location, which is huge and just as well located.
