DD is a junior at Virginia Tech and just sent me a screen shot of a message appearing on Canvas from some organization called "ShinyHunters ... rooting your system since 2019

"
"ShinyHunters has breached Instructure [sic] (again. Instead of contacting us to resolve it they ignored us and did some "security patchers."
It goes on to say "if any of the schools in the affected list are interested in preventing the release of their data, please consult with a cyber advisory firm and contact us privately to negotiate a settlement."
Threatens to start leaking on 12 May.
Massive cybersecurity breach. All of VT is locked out. This insinuates other schools, too.
They use Canvas to access all word documents, every assignment and past exam... All tests are through Canvas as well.
Basically, our college students are hostage in an cyberextortion event. During finals week.
Anybody heard anything about this at Tech or other schools?
