Does anyone here have experience with establishing temporary (potentially permanent) guardianship of a minor relative who is living out of state? This teenager was struggling due to mental health issues (of a parent and sibling) and instability in the home and stopped attending school. Teen is with me now for a temporary stay and would like to make it permanent until the end of high school. Parent is 50/50 on the fence about agreeing.
I’ve read that the parent can agree to temporary guardianship and simply sign a notatized form that can be good for up to 180 days and used for school enrollment purposes.
Has anyone gone to the circuit court to petition for guardianship beyond that time frame? If so, any recommended attorneys in NoVA for guardianship issues?
I’m in a chicken/egg situation because I need to get information from my local HS about how his transcript from out of state will translate for VA graduation credits in order to persuade his parent to go along with the plan, but school officials won’t talk with me until I have guardianship papers in hand and actually enroll the student.
