We have two friends with kids there currently in 7th and 10th grade, and this hasn't been their experience. They seem to be having a well rounded school experience and are excelling in their areas of interest (theater and science/engineering).

Too much probably as in the kids were all too needy and the focus was only what's the one thing you aren't good at, and let's only work on that. That was our experience and why we left.

McLean parent here. We looked at both schools and while we liked some components of Lab, we ultimately felt that she wouldn't get enough challenge and stretch in the areas of her academic strength. (she has dyslexia and adhd inattentive). Also, just not enough programming to make it feel like a traditional school. Coming from another independent school, we value all the ways she can be involved (she's in middle school now - came in 3rd grade), and she's really shining socially and adademically. She has the right amount of support and intervention and acceleeration. We personally also liked that she would have more peers with a variety of learning strenghts and challenges, Lab felt a little too much like they dumbed things down for everyone and everyone was academically challenged. But agree with PP, go visit both.

I would recommend to visit both schools.

They are completely different schools.

Lab is for children with more severe dyslexia and in the upper grades, there way more boys than girls.

Not all children at McLean have dyslexia and/or ADHD. They do offer support for children with dyslexia.

I would also consider grade, gender, long term goals and commute when selecting a school.

Any thoughts on the differences between Lab and McLean for ADHD and dyslexia for a 4th grade girl?
