I had friends years ago that were Banneker Key scholars and they became RAs. UMD gave them refund checks for room and board (RAs get free room and board). They invested it and graduated with so much money.

My kid has the full BK. There have been a handful of events but that’s it. The honors colleges provide much more of a community/advisory. That said, apparently as a BK kid it’s fairly easy to get research positions on campus.
This is not at all like the Morehead Cain
