We went to Oregon last summer with teens the same ages as yours. We visited Columbia/Hood River area, Cannon beach, drove down the coast as far as Florence and spent our last day in Portland.

Honestly I wouldn't plan on spending more than a day in Portland. There is some good food and fun places like Powell books to check out, but unless you love cities, the coast and Oregon nature are so much better. i would take more time at the beach over time in Portland.

There were lots of homeless people on some areas but they weren’t aggressive about begging. I’d check it out again, maybe do a 2 day visit.

My kids liked the Japanese Garden a lot too.

We have a family reunion in Cannon Beach this summer. Flying in and out of Portland. Should we spend time in Portland, or just head straight to the coast? Kids are 16 and 13.
