OP - How was your period on Slynd?

I skipped periods for decades with continuous birth control, but my gyn wanted me to stop the pill when I hit 50 because of stroke risk. Things were bad for a year or so because of adenomyosis and fibroids, and I also happened to switch gynecologists during that new year. New gyn suggested an IUD. It was my first as well.

Mostly I’ve loved it. After a couple of months my periods stopped almost completely except for a day or two of spotting once every few months. My only grumble is that I still have discomfort that feels like mild period cramps much of the time. I’ll probably hang in there through menopause and hope it goes away. Doesn’t seem serious enough to go all the way to hysterectomy. But I do wish that I could live without that.

I had super heavy bleeding for a few years from fibroids and finally at 50 I had a hysterascopy and ablation. It has been life changing and was not a difficult surgery. I was worried about general anesthesia because I had never had it before but I was so miserable I did it and it was fine. Easy recovery and no more periods but still have my uterus. Combined with hrt and no bleeding I’m a new person.

A friend had embolization with a great result. I did the Mirena, birth control and myomectomy - none worked. Ended up lysteta plus period underwear plus doubling up on menstrual products plus black pants at work everyday (ugh) and was thinking about embolization when I…stopped bleeding. Forever. Such a relief.

I went with myomectomy to have them removed.

^^and don't do the embolization. It has risks and marginal success, depending on size and number. Your only option after embolization is hysterectomy.

Gyns will tell you that fibroids stop growing after menopause. That was not true for 3 women I know who all had hysterectomies due to fibroids 10+ years post menopause. What type of fibroids are they? Heavy bleeding makes me think they are sub mucosal (within the uterus.) Why haven't you been offered a surgical solution? Do you really want to mess with hormonal treatments at this stage?

I had heavy bleeding from fibroids at 56- surgeon recommended a myomectomy. It helped a little for a few months but cycles seemed too heavy so went on norethindrone. It helps a little but cycles still heavy. Pretty sure I’ve had endometriosis since 14. Waiting/hoping for menopause at 58…

I had mine removed.

I would do Mirena of those options

I’m 53 and get very heavy periods due to fibroids. My doctor has suggested the following three options. Anyone have any input/personal experience/thoughts?

1. Uterine artery embolization
2. A Mirena IUD (never had an IUD before)
3. Slynd bc pills

I has two kids via C-section if that matters.
