Oh come on. I take this at face value.

People can still take classes in many of the subjects.

They hardly had any students affected by this announcement.

Why would you have ever gone to Syracuse for an Italian major or ceramics major?

They also still have in-demand majors that kids want to take but are hard to get high-paying jobs in. Like Sports Management.

Also when schools drop marginal programs it can sometimes help other programs to strengthen their programs by collecting sufficient students.

More healthy universities should do this. It's good to revisit offerings and prune prudently.

Is there a problem with this supply and demand approach? Is the concern that the handful of kids who did want these majors are now unable?

Syracuse is indeed in decline.

Syracuse is having issues. No one in their right mind would shell out $90,000 a year except for Newhouse maybe. Its location also kills it. Its decline over the past two decades has been sad.

They clearly have academic/admissions issues if 80+ majors are just operating with no one in them.

I have a kid there now, on a big scholarship, and I still wouldn’t pay that much for her to major ceramics!

I would not worry at all. Syracuse was offering almost the twice the majors available at ma typical school their size. Most of the impacted majors were already closed, not just officially shut down.

DC is considering Syracuse, many of the majors cut had literally no one majoring in the courses. The article said that the few hundred students impacted would be graduating from very similar majors. It’s not a concern in the slightest.

Syracuse is cutting 84 majors, although it sounds like many of them had nobody or few students majoring in them. Regardless, students considering Syracuse should take a closer look at what programs and courses will be available.
