Kids, dogs, the elderly, and others less sure of foot do much better with carpeted stairs.

Coe and Son. It’s expensive, but they have the best styles and the knowledge to make it look luxe. If that’s what you want.

Anyone recommend a good carpet store in MoCo?

Years ago we did a traditional runner on the stairs of a 1920s Tudor. It had a landing in the middle. The carpet store had Persian design runners, and the install people cut the runner at angles to continue the runner on the landing. With the same runner, they made little carpets to place one at the top and one at the bottom. All floors were hardwood throughout the house. We had a very old, big dog who couldn't manage the stairs without some sort of rug. Otherwise I would have left them bare wood. But it ended up really beautiful.

And crazy slippery for anyone wearing socks. Also, the slightest slip on the stairs can lead to a big injury without a carpet to cushion the fall.

As someone who fell on the stairs and injured my tailbone, let me tell you it is no fun. It was almost a year I couldn’t sit without pain, and it still flares up. Stairs are uniquely well designed for tail bone injuries.

When well done the carpet really elevates the look of the entry and is safer too.

DP: what carpet store did you use?

This is sort of what I was thinking. What kind of a color did you do? I'm torn about whether it would look better to go a little darker than the oak wood tone, or stay lighter. Our walls are light (like a whipped butter or vanilla pudding color on the walls).

I was at Home Depot picking up plants and saw some samples...what do you think about these?

We have a late 90s house and th stairs are the same as all the late 90s stairs. They are oak with white painted bannister accents and up th middle of the stairs is that off white carpet in all new homes from the 90s.

I’d like to replace it — what would you get? I’m open to pretty much anything. There’s a landing halfway up where the stairs turn so I think a stair runner doesn’t work great because I don’t know what we’d do on the landing. It’s right in the front hallway so visible to everyone that comes in the house.
