No, they aren’t typically going online. They are just completing the required courses in a compressed timeline. That might mean taking the half of a course online, or doing additional work outside of school to basically go double time during the first trimester to get requirements done. Is your question because your student will possibly be in the situation? Their school will work with you to make sure the requirements are met if you approach them!

Thanks. How do they go to school for half a year is maybe the biggest question? Most public schools are on a full year course calendar basis. Or are these players not actually playing their last HS year and going to school traditionally? I see there is a virtual Virginia option that does semester based courses, but it seems if you do that you the aren’t going to the regular school the final year. Is that’s what is happening?

HS teacher here and I’ve had a few graduate early for different reasons. It could be sports to start college with the team, personal reasons, or they don’t like HS and want to get it over with.

As the other poster said, they need a certain number of credits and when they are fulfilled they are done. Most are done by the end of 11th grade for a standard diploma for many kids and they only need English 12 and maybe 1 or 2 more, if that. They can plan ahead, double up junior year, take them in the summer and/or take online classes. Usually it’s a combo of all of that. It’s not that hard to hit the minimum credits and school is more flexible now with so many virtual class options.

Think of high school like a checklist. you need a certain number of classes (credits) to graduate. Normally, kids finish that checklist at the end of 12th grade. But some athletes finish it early.

Here’s how it works, in super simple terms:
* You don’t have to stay 4 full years, you just have to finish all your required classes.
* Some students take extra classes earlier (like summer school, online classes, or doubling up during the year).
* By doing that, they can finish all their credits by mid-year senior year (January) instead of June.

Once they finish:
* They officially graduate early
* Then they can start college in January (spring semester) instead of waiting until the fall

Seems many top team players are graduating early to get an extra semester / spring start for college ball. How does that work? HS courses are year long. How do you prepare early on if you want to do this?
