You are absolutely right, but they are doing the right thing now. Most AAP students are ready for Algebra I in 6th, but it is a good option to be able to opt out if there are any concerns.

It’s not fair to current AAP 6th grades who were not allowed to take it.
My AAP child passed advanced SOL in every grade except in grade 5 due to some personal reasons. He did not meet the criteria and had to do math 7.

Log in to parent digital consent. All AAP grade 5 kids are opted in for algebra 1 in grade 6. Parents are given the choice to opt out. There is NO criteria expect that the kid has to be in AAP.

My dd is starting 7th and I was to disenroll her but I worry it will put her at a huge disadvantage. My son did algebra in 8 a few years ago and is still mad at me about it.

Ok but what I'm saying is if this is the next step in moving Gen ed to algebra in 8th, are the kids moving to the district from somewhere on a more traditional path going to be placed in remedial algebra for 9th?

It’s interesting because Arlington went the opposite direction. It used to only be pre-algebra or math 6 for 6th graders, they added additional levels because too many kids were either bombing out of pre-algebra or not getting any challenge in math 6

We are looking at middle school abroad and most schools don't even offer algebra until 9th grade, maybe 8th if you are lucky. I am fine with algebra in 8th but I'm afraid if we go down that path, my kid is going to be seriously screwed for course placement in HS. I doubt that's even some Dr. Reid has considered.

My sixth graders in advanced math and got the same email

Just checked on the website. Automatic placement into Algebra I for all 6th grade advanced math students. They're just getting rid of the SOL threshold.

We got the email as well. Our DS is in the 6th grade AAP. I wonder whether they used MAP scores from the winter testing. Last winter when DS took the most recent MAP, he said that the message on the final screen where the score was displayed, also said something along the lines that his scores indicates readiness for the higher levels of math, including Algebra I.

We got the same email. Superintendent Reed has been really pushing to get more kids through Alg I by 8th. So each year one of the requirements is removed. Last year they did away with the Iowa assessment. Now I guess they're nixing the SOL requirement as well. Our kid is in level IV but we opted out of Alg I this year because it would have been virtual at our school (not great for a kid with pretty bad ADHD). But good to know we don't need to stress about the SOL anymore.

My child who is in 6th grade non AAP got into AAP MS . He was doing advanced math though. Today we got email saying that our child is automatically enrolled into algebra 1 honors. Initially it was after after getting SOL pass advanced
