I really like voting on the actual Election Day - it feels special to me. I've been an election officer for the last few elections and have to vote early (I've never been assigned to work at my polling place.) I'm not working this election so I'm waiting until Tuesday to vote. The rest of my family has already voted.

With all of the heated political rhetoric and incidents of political violence, it would be foolish to keep schools open. There’s no way to keep the building secure on voting days. During special elections this year, schools were told to have a staff member monitor the door that separated the voters from the rest of the school. That is someone who was pulled from working with students, who was unarmed, asked to act as security. The Board of Elections nor the county would provide personnel to help with security.

I’m from another country where elections take place on the weekends. Schools are used as polling places without disruption. With widespread early voting opportunities is there really a need to stick to Tuesdays?

+1 another idiotic post complaining. Sigh.

There is a certain kind of brain rotted parent who thinks anything that inconveniences them must be a new scheme cooked up by FCPS in the last 1-2 years. Next they’ll be like “since when can’t schools also teach on the weekends??”

+2 The title of these threads should be : Why can’t the public school schedule be tailored to my life like my phone is.

NP. It is weird we don't hold elections on Saturdays, when school is not in session. People who can't do Saturdays for whatever reason could still do early voting, but you'd eliminate the school disruption.

Sometimes they do have the schools open while smaller elections are taking place, but this one is expected to have a pretty decent turnout, so they had concerns that the greater number of voters would interfere with the regular school day.

I think there's just as many creepy people around now as there were 20 years ago. Was education a higher priority back then?

Why can’t voting either take place after school hours, like 5-8pm or on a Saturday or Sunday like other countries. Why do schools have to close for voting?
