He gets worse before before she gets better. I’m glad I kept reading but it’s a long, slow read, and the artist sucks.

The audio version of this is really good, I thought. It does get better after the artist is out of the picture.

DNF myself. About 100 pages in, I could feel that it would continue this way for a while and I just couldnt get into it. I am Indian and the description of the family in India wasnt "exotic" or different for me so there wasnt that hook that would have kept me reading on. If the author hadnt won the Booker prize years ago and had the pull in the industry due to that, I wonder if this book would have gotten all this publicity.

I felt bad since I gave up during the abusive relationship, especially because the book has so many accolades. I was feeling like some kind of low-brow reader only fit for Colleen Hoover or something. It's length was also daunting. So I'm glad I have some compatriots here.

I recommend continuing with it. Yeah the stuff with the artist guy is really hard to read, but I think it’s worth sticking with it. And it all comes together at the end.

Oh geez - I loved this book! So hard to read the first part where she stays in that abusive relationship, yes, but so worth it all by the end. If you like long family books like this, I'd stick with it. I really enjoyed it!

OP I came here to ask the same thing! I rarely give up books, but this one is so dense it would kill a lot of reading time for more enjoyable books. I’m finding it too hard to keep the characters straight despite the chart in the front. I’m so disappointed. So much great hype for this book that I also wonder if I’m giving up too quickly. Fwiw my mom, a massive reader, gave it up as well.
