If you are in Arlington, it may make sense for your kid to take econ/personal finance and PE over the summer. Ask around about whether the econ teachers at your kids high school are good. This may be true in other districts too - I just know APS.

This is a weird and creepy thing to say about your kid and most 14 year old boys are not trying to get to second base.

She loves musical theater so she is doing one all day camp in July that culminates in a show. And then for August, she is doing a different all day camp that culminates in a show. She is also taking 10 hours of dance classes a week (in the evening, and note she isn’t some high level dancer but would like to be) and wants to take voice five days a week and tumbling once a week. I’ve only agreed to once a week voice.
On Fridays after camp and weekends, she will want to be with her friends as much as possible.

I think my kid is insane and should veg out more. But that is not who she is. She also wants to start tutoring for AP Gov in August so she can get ahead. This will be her first AP class. Haven’t sorted that out yet.

If the family has downtime teacher the kid to cook a meal. Try a new hobby like knitting or woodworking. This is the age for them to master new skills and build self-esteem by feeling capable, which is why camp is such a good idea.

Seven weeks of sleepaway camp. Visit grandma. Eat. Sleep. Train a bit for their fall sport. Read a few books.

Let your kid be a kid and have joy and happiness in their life. Plenty of time for work.

Summer school PE in June, day camp junior counselor, 2 weeks sleepaway camp

For those of you whose kids mostly hang out - do they have a parent at home? I know dd would like to do this more (although the day camp thing is 100% her choice - it is her happy place - a camp in the woods with no amenities or bathrooms) but we are at work during the day and she is not in biking distance of friends or town pool. I did tell her she can skip three days of summer school, since they can have 3 absences and still get credit. I just don't want her home alone the whole month sitting in the house.

These are not some resume building activities for colleges..

My son did a sleep away camp for a week, vacation, an intensive week of math tutoring because he struggles in the area, and a cooking class.

I taught him cursive because when he was in FCPS elementary they didn’t teach it.

The rest of the time he played video games .

At that age, mine did the following:
-took Econ online
-summer swim team
-travel with family
-just hanging out— swimming, meeting with friends, reading books, hiking, outings with parent and sibling, etc. Was 13 most of the summer, so no job.

Knocking out one semester of health online, two weeks of sleep away camp, some SSL hours, beach, dog sitting, etc.
