You can listen to audible directly on an Alexa device. We also discovered that if I'm in the house, I can play audiobooks I get on Libby from my phone using bluetooth without having to be in the same room or even the same floor.

We had Bard for a while. It was fun. This might work better for a younger kid. My DS wouldn’t touch it as he got older.

Is this for home or travel? We just use an amazon alexa at home.

This is a great question. We’ve also been trying to to figure out the best way for when we travel.
We ended up buying Amazon tablets when they were on sale and downloading only hoopla and Libby. We had to set up library accounts for each kid and download the books before we travel. It’s not the best solution, but the books are all free this way.
We also have a yoto and tonie but the cards/figures are expensive and pretty limited.

I wanted to add that DS is a teen now and has his own phone.

If you have an old cell phone, just set up Libby or whatever app you're using. Don't give the kid the code to the phone. Once you start an audiobook for them, they can hit play, pause, forward and back but not use the phone for anything else. This worked great for us for years.

You can also get a cheap wifi only iphone and lock it into guided access mode, so she can only use the audiobook app.

If you had the audio books on mp3, you could purchase a drag and drop mp3 player on amazon.

How old is she? Yoto fits this description. You would buy cards she can put in to listen to stories. If there is an audiobook they don't have a card for I think you can use one of their blank "make your own" cards to record mp3 files onto it. I have never done this though. There is a phone app you can use to access free content and podcasts but you can also just give her cards.

My dyslexic kid loves audio books, but we don’t want her to have a phone or iPad. Is there a good device that’s not a phone/ipad/web-browser type thing? I want something simple like a kindle but for audio books.
