Speak to the owner of the vet practice directly and ask if the content an tone of the receptionist's message is the messaging they intend to their clients. And if your go to a vet's office that is owned by an investment firm get the heck out of there.

There is no place for them to take the info.
I work for the Police and people call us too. I literally write the info on a post it for myself for the day but after that its gone.
If the dog is chipped or has a Tag on you will be notified.

We had a neighbor whose dogs kept getting out. They were friendly dogs and they always came back. They were pretty laid back about it. Drove the neighbors crazy because they were big dogs and people don't necessarily know they are friendly dogs. One of the dogs got hit and had to be put down. The owners finally added on to their fence so the remaining dog, then dogs couldn't get out. They just didn't want to spend the money before.

Agreed, you need to secure your yard and pet.

Separately, at our vet they have a bulletin board where you can bring in small signs to alert people you've lost your dog.

Either get a new vet, or next time you're in there ask the vet if that is policy or was the receptionist mistaken. They may have never had the issue come up.

I feel like you get responses like that when they’ve been burned before, like they took in a dog who was a patient of theirs who had been lost, called the owner, and then the owner took their sweet time picking up the dog. Now the receptionist knows better than to agree to take custody of a client’s lost dog because of the problem in the past.

I would expect the vet office to call me as a valued client. If I got this treatment I would make a point of speaking to the vet, tell them what you were told, ask if that's their practice or if receptionist needs training.
If vet said eff off I would change vets abd tell them why.

I bet you just got a bad or confused receptionist. I wouldn’t sweat it.

It wouldn’t occur to me to call my vet if our dog was missing but I’m sure if someone brought the dog in for some reason they would scan them and call me, or at least take them to a shelter or something.

I brought a stray kitten to the vet once and they were wonderful. They’re not going to tie your dog to the lamppost out front. But there’s also nothing for them to do about your missing dog.

Secure your yard.

I've done the same. The vet was instrumental in getting me connected with the owner and the dog returned home. OP's vet sounds like bad people.

I would absolutely expect my vet to hold my dog, at least through the end of the business day. What a nutty response from the receptionist!

However, it probably would not occur to me to take a found dog to the vet instead of either the public shelter or the address on its collar. So it seems like an unlikely scenario to actually happen.

OP, I hope your dog is safe and located quickly.

Weird responses attacking the vet and totally doesn't mention that OPs dog KEEPS GETTING OUT of the yard yet they make no effort to fix the problem!

Get your life together its not normal your dog keeps getting lost. You sound irresponsible.

Get a better vet, OP. Or advise the practice that the receptionist needs some training.

The receptionist acted like I was crazy to let them know he was missing and just said “if someone brings him here we won’t hold him”. I don’t except them to hold him, just giving them a head up in case someone comes in with the dog. Am I wrong to think that someone might bring the dog to the vet listed on the rabies tag and that they’d let me know? I’d also expect them to hold him for an hour or so and I’d fully expect pay for them to hold him too.

I would get a better vet. out chipped dog escaped and was taken to out local vet. They called and I went and got the dog. there was no charge.
