This is OP - thanks for confirming and I'm glad people feel like it's worthy of the Booker. I'm enjoying the book but so far questioning the high praise for it. I will see how I feel when I finish it. I'm about halfway through it now.

It is odd writing but it was a really thought-provoking book and I’m glad I stuck with it. Actually I never wanted to dump it, I did find it weird but I was very compelled

I had the same reaction to the dialogue and just the writing in general initially and almost gave up. Only stuck with it because it had won the Booker prize and wanted to see why. Glad I stuck with it, it stayed with me long after and it wasn’t because of the prose which was fairly simplistic all along. More that the story built over time to lay out the protoganists life story and downs and ups and downs again

At one point I even wondered if it was a translation since the author is Hungarian but wasn’t it seems. It does read like a badly translated book at times

It got such great reviews and won the Booker prize but I find the dialogue so lazy. The number of times "Okay" is used must be in the hundreds.

Actual dialogue:
She nods, smiling at him.
"Okay" he says
"Will you do something for me?"
"Okay"
"Like this"
"Okay"


The box is fine, an easy read. I'm just surprised it won the Booker with this dialogue. Anyone else?
