My high stats kid did not get into scholars or honors. She got into FIRE. Not sure what it is, but she passed. She got into several schools ranked higher than UMD and will be attending one of those. UMD was really a safety for her.

Was not true for my kids. UMD was at least 15K less a year. Even bigger difference for my kid in UMD honors + scholarship.

The higher ranked the out of state flagship, less merit.

From my kids’ school, it’s pretty predictable who gets in to which - honors kids have higher stats and more leadership.
