You don't have to put them under the same umbrella. There are specific terms for very severe sexual assault -- rape, incest, molestation, child sexual assault, etc. Obviously if those words don't apply to you situation, you shouldn't use them. There are also words for less grave sexual assault -- groping, exposure, etc. Use the word that applies to your situation.

However, it's worthwhile to have a general catch all term that describes all sexual assault, because there are commonalities. As someone who has worked in crisis intervention for sexual violence, being able to describe all acts with one term is very helpful -- it can offer survivors some anonymity and privacy (it is much, much easier to say "I was sexually assaulted" than to be specific, which can make it easier for a survivor to seek out support) and it can allow people who had different experiences to connect over what is similar.

So on language, we're good.

Because there is more than just the one alone incident Ruby Rose, and the specific details of these reports, it sounds to me like she has a history of getting handsy with people and doesn’t understand that she crosses the line, which people have various reactions to. But when that line is crossed, it’s assault.

Anna Kendrick - Says Perry fingered her cleavage. Framed it as a joke not SA, but also called it “aggressive.”

Josh Kloss - Says Perry pulled open the waist his pants and exposed him to several people. In what world is that ok? If true, that’s assault.

Ruby Rose - Says Perry exposed her genitals and rubbed them on her bare face. If witnesses corroborate, that’s an assault. Not sure how it’s possible to argue otherwise.

The allegations against Perry include both things that would definitely fall under SA, like rubbing genitalia on a victim’s face, and others that were various forms of unwanted touching like removing clothes, fingering cleavage, unwanted kissing. If she caught charges they would definitely be charged differently. How do you think we should talk about it?
