Why are you assuming OP’s daughter is straight and will only pursue men? Many queer women choose Wellesley because of its prominent LGTBQ population. Even so, many of the women who date men at Wellesley date MIT, Harvard, Babson, Olin, etc. men. They’re not hurting for men when their bus and shuttle has stops at the aforementioned schools.

Tell me you know nothing about Wellesley without telling me you know nothing about Wellesley.

I’m a Cornell alumni who lives near Wellesley. These great schools could not be more different. Totally about which one is a better fit. One personal point. Wellesley MA is a lovely suburb but seems boring for college kids. I liked Ithaca as a college town but that’s me.

At this point, student gets to go with their gut. They will adapt and get the most out of it. They will want to prove their decision was a good one.

Wellesley if she can find her people on admitted students' day. My DC was choosing between W and another ivy. The campus is probably the most beautiful campus in the country. Did research at MIT over the summer.

Wellesley, unless your kid is either (1) not actually interested in a women's college, or (2) already has a strong interest that Wellesley can't serve. Wellesley has a ton of resources and is close to many universities, so 95% of women will be able to pursue their interests there with no problem. The alumnae network is exceptional, nothing really like it.

That seems uncharitable. Some girls truly see the appeal in both environments. These girls are 18 - many are still figuring out who they are and what they want out of college (and life!)

They’re very different schools. Your daughter needs to think through what environment will suit her better. Make sure to visit both and then decide. For some students, Wellesley will seem too small while others will love that warm cozy feeling. Some girls will love the women’s only environment. Others would prefer coed

Just admit you were prestige hunting and here is where you landed.

Wellesley women can take classes and research at MIT. It’s actually pretty common, though not as convenient as being in a R1 university.

Many may question how is it possible to have a pair that are so different. We actually met a few families with similar options on our admitted students days. So they attract kids in different ways.

SLACs take care of the kids very well. Small classes, close relationships with the professors, flexible curriculum. Cornell obviously has much larger class sizes, particularly for intro courses. Kids probably don’t have as much interactions with the professors.

The drawback of SLACs is that they are very small. Kids may outgrow it in two years. There are research opportunities but not comparable to R1 research universities.

Has anyone faced a similar situation before? How did your DC make the decision? The question is not directly related to specific major or career paths but I guess it could be. My understanding is both schools have outstanding outcomes.
