My cousin married a French guy and I was really taken aback when, on a night out, the first time we met each other, he asked both how much I pay in rent and what my salary is. I answered the first and just said "five figures" for the second question. Apparently French people are more open about money than Americans.

+1!

DH is Eastern European and several of his friends have asked us how much we make.

Who is asking you?

If OP is worried about someone asking to borrow money, I'm guessing it's a relative.

If concerned about people asking to borrow money: Hopefully, enough. But who knows given the unknown of eldercare.

I literally have never had anyone ask me this. I have had people want to discuss what is the number? But they generally don't know that much about finance, and don't understand that one's number is predicated on how much one anticipates spending in retirement.

But, as this PP says, I would say, Hopefully, enough.

Though if someone is obnoxious enough to ask the question in the first place, then they might follow up with, What is enough? Then say I really can't answer that for you. It's all dependent on how much you plan to spend in retirement, 4% rule, etc. And if they still pushed, I'd get a tone, and say Why are you asking? I'm not going to talk about our specific circumstances, but happy to talk finance in theory.

Most of us have no one in our lives whom we would ever think would ask to borrow money

The one I know who does this is completely insecure and always has to measure herself against others.

I like the “not enough” or something like that comeback.

What’s a good comeback for nosey people who ask how much money you have saved? If I ask them why they want to know, they never explain why they want to know how much retirement money I have. It makes me suspect they want to borrow money from me in the future. How do I shut it down so they don’t ask ever again?
