I never said it was OK. I said it is very common and parents can't stop it. They can only help their kids make wiser decisions.

We have a zero tolerance policy for our children, and since they're like us, they're not remotely interested. We have a 21 year old and a 16 year old.

Your daughter is addicted if she can't go without it, even if she's not a heavy consumer. Talk to her and find a dopamine-rich activity she can try to replace weed with. What's important is to keep your relationship of trust - she needs to tell you when she really wants it, and then you can jump in and propose a replacement. Keep educating her on the memory loss, and other downsides of weed.

She needs substance abuse counseling. This is terrible for her developing brain. Cut off her phone, monitor her on computer, and no money. Help her before it’s too late. Warning: she will be angry, addicted always are.

What’s wrong with her having weed? What is it doing to her? People on here say it’s harmless. I personally believe it is a scourge and will cause the downfall of our society. I do want to know why you are unhappy with her using it after you condoned its use.

You might be a troll. But, if you're not- talk to her about how it's hard to go 2 weeks without using it. Ask her to think about what that means for her body and her mind- that she is craving this feeling that she knows isn't good for her developing brain. Ask her to write down how she spends her time when she's high vs when she's not. Ask her if getting high makes her connect with other people, or makes her isolate herself (alcohol is terrible for you but teens usually drink in groups and hang out- which at least has some social benefits, not that it cancels out all of the awful health effects and the risks of drunk driving and unwanted sexual encounters and the rest of it). Help her come to the decision herself that she shouldn't be using it so much.
But also, smoking pot twice a month as a high schooler isn't the end of the world.

We tried to take a more realistic approach to marijuana as parents. DH and I both gave it a whirl when we were teens and figured probably DD would too. We didn’t want to encourage it, but merely be prepared. However, she REALLY likes it and doesn’t like to go more than two weeks without a taste. If we just demand that she quit cold turkey I fear this will just make it worse. But this is getting intense. Does anyone, particularly those people who seem to have perfected gentle parenting, have any tips or tricks?
