Any swiss watch. My favorites are Omega and Jaeger LeCoultre.

To be honest though, after many decades, I have retired them and wear a smartwatch. Most of my friends also only wear their Swiss watches for special occasions so it's just not worth it like it used to be.

For the Rolex tradition at a better price, and with a better vibe, try Tudor. Hamilton is nice and lowkey and respectable. A Cartier Tank is a tasteful choice for a rich guy. Some Pateks are works of great beauty. I personally wear a Timex Weekender.

DH has a lot of nice watches, he’s not a Rolex guy either, and my favorite is panerai.

I wouldn't be caught dead wearing a smart watch.

Is it a gift, or is it for you?
If it’s a gift, I’d say find a store that will let you bring him in to try on a few.

OP here - I'm more interested in the Blancpain or Longines sort of style. Rolex's marketing seems tacky and obnoxious. I've never bought a fancy watch and have no clue about price points, wrist measurements, etc.

The same can be said about most women's clothes and especially handbags.

There's a waiting list for most models, so while PP is a great watch (and pricey!) it may not be attainable.

Omega is a good choice, or Tudor or IWC.

Shinola is made in America. Obama and Bush wore it.

How old are you? For a younger set, I would recommend Omega seamaster.

That’s probably the best way to narrow it.

What type of watch are you looking for and what is your budget? Do you not want a Rolex because they are hard to get or is there something specific you don’t like about the brand?

Where do you start? Do you go to a jewelry store and ask to see watches? I'm not interested in Rolexes at all.
