Next year, support her working on assignments early so she has time to revise and, if necessary, talk to the teacher to expand her ideas. This has really helped my stem-oriented kid, no tutor necessary.
All that PLUS have her write whatever she wants to about the books that she reads. Call it journaling, writing her own fan fiction about it, whatever. Doesn't have to have any particular structure. Just get her used to writing often, so it's not climbing a mountain when she gets a writing assignment.
You can also get a sense of her spelling, vocab, grammar, organization, etc. again without making it a major "assignment."
