All that PLUS have her write whatever she wants to about the books that she reads. Call it journaling, writing her own fan fiction about it, whatever. Doesn't have to have any particular structure. Just get her used to writing often, so it's not climbing a mountain when she gets a writing assignment.

You can also get a sense of her spelling, vocab, grammar, organization, etc. again without making it a major "assignment."

I agree with the poster that recommended just having her read a lot this summer.

Read as many books as possible. Her choice what she reads, just get her reading.

We did a week at The Write Turn. Kids enjoyed it and it helped with essay writing structure.

But do people use tutors to improve their writing?

She’s likely to have summer reading and writing assignments anyway.

Is there a local tutor or class people use?

Letting her read what she likes will do way more for her than trying to drudge through a book list.

I also was meh at writing in middle school and what helped me the most was getting into a creative writing group. Like everything practice makes perfect. By college people assumed I was a communications major because my writing was so strong.

My daughter is starting at a top all girls HS this fall. Her math and science grades and scores are outstanding, reading and writing just ok. What prep would you suggest this summer for her to get ready? Any specific books, tutors, classes, etc?
