The fact that VA has retained its use of the term “Commonwealth” doesn’t mean it isn’t a state.

This reminds me of that asinine argument that makes the rounds on Facebook every few years about how the United States isn’t a democracy because it’s a republic. You can be a republic and a democracy at the same time. And you can call it either.

People sound so stupid when they get this pedantic over her stuff like this. It’s funny, because they do it because they think they sound smart. It’s the opposite.

Commonwealth of Virginia is technically correct. But it’s not like anyone misunderstood the train conductor.

Eh, it comes across as pedantry and really doesn't matter. There's no functional difference.

Just heard my metro train operator announced “… stop in the state of Virginia…” First time ever to hear that. He’s wrong, right? Maybe he’s from Maryland so says “State of Maryland” more often?
