I was surprised to hear at our base school that is also a center, kids have to test in before each and every unit. They only get to go to the AAP class if they test well enough on the pre-test for that unit and it's not necessarily the same teacher each time. Talk about disruptive!

Parents can ask that their kids be considered for what used to be LII and III services and Advanced Math. There is/was technically a form that you could fill out but I think most people just sent an email to the AART, classroom teacher, and Principal.

My child is at a center school and she’s in advanced math. She was the only one in fourth and fifth grade to be placed in advanced math with the AAP class. And every year it had to be renewed. I got a letter every year advising that she will have advanced math for the upcoming year. I am happy to say this year in sixth grade there’s a second student.

There were a lot of schools that were always on the acceleration begins in 5th grade track, my kids school was one of them. It worked at a good number of schools before it was used across the county. The Teachers knew what kids were ahead in math, the hope was that by exposing all of the kids to some advanced material they could find more students who were ready for acceleration. It works fine.

They did meaningfully change the math standards for advanced math before last year though. There was a huge fight on this board over whether it changed things. It did look like 3rd and 4th got easier, but then 5th picked up more than before so they were still taking the 6th grade SOLs at the end. You can search for the old threads. And now there's still 6th grade Algebra 1, so the point of acceleration just changed.

Do they actually still do advance math in Fairfax like up a grade or has it been dumbed down to enrichment like in Alexandria.

I'd ask a direct one sentence question, at the end of the year, to the current AAP Math Teacher.

Always be vigilant re: any advising differences between the AAP kids and the General Ed kids especially for the beginning of MS, and 9th the beginning of HS

+1 I don’t think they would remove a kid from advanced math at my kid’s school unless the math grades were really slipping, or on parent request. And even if the grades were slipping I’m sure the parents could put up a stink and fight to keep the kid there. But there are generally a few kids added at the beginning of each school year.

Advanced Math was an annual decision at our ES. There were not many kids that were placed in Advanced Math that were removed from Advance Math but kids were added every year. But that is what I observed at our school.

This is what used to be called Level III but has now been renamed to subject-specific something or other. Do I need to submit a new form or will they keep my child in advanced math next year? We are at a LLIV school with one LLIV/AAP classroom. My child is in a regular classroom and pushes into the AAP class for math (along with several other kids).
