TBVH, 100% of the time when this happened, at least one of your recommendation letters is problematic.
There is no way you can know this.

College admissions are gamble even for great students so no need to take it personally. Go to the school which values your potential and do well there. Make friends, join activities, seek internships, take classes which interests you, reach out to professors, date, do semester abroad, be productive, do career counseling and have loads of fun. Make these 4 years of your youth count and then go to a good grad or professional school or apply to a lot of jobs and secure a good one.

My child got rejected in ivies, waitlisted in some public and private which we were confident to be in, and in some OOS public schools with 4.45 / 1580. GPA is all schools care about. We thought it was rigor and GPA and we were wrong

How did you decide those schools were safeties? Sounds like those might have been better labeled as targets with a lower GPA.

I’m sorry. Maybe one of the waitlist schools will come through, but I know he’ll have to make a decision for now and hopefully come around to it. GMU and VCU are definitely solid schools and have a lot to offer.

This is interesting. OP could it possibly be that he is an extremely bright kid who tests well because he’s smart, but phoned it in on some of his class work- maybe because he was bored- and the recs from teachers are less than stellar because they know he wasn’t living up to potential?

What does "lower" gpa mean? 3.8 (which isn't actually low) or 2.8?
Even though the rejections sting now, I hope he has a great time at one of the schools that accepted him.

Crush it for one year at GMU/JMU/CC and try to transfer to UVA. I still think GMU really pulls above its weight in terms of DMV job outcomes if that doesn’t work.

This really reinforces the idea that GPA is the screen nowadays; SAT is relevant only as a plus factor once you make it through the GPA screen.

Ugh thats tough. The colleges all say they want top rigor, but honestly some rigor with a higher GPA seems more successful--especially at the state schools.
