Wait, the Jo Boaler who wrote a bunch of math books that people seem to love?Mindset Mathematics volumes for different grades seem to be beloved. I thought the homeschool and extra enrichment people were pretty picky and savy about which resources they use.

Only by those rewriting history. I'm a Dem but was shocked and furious when I saw what the VA DOE had planned. They then walked it back and tried to pretend otherwise, but it was the proposal. I watched the video and read the website. Gaslighting isn't going to work here.

So glad algebra is back in middle school. I don't necessarily agree with moving it all the way to 6th grade like FCPS is trying, but 7th or 8th grade algebra is a good option for accelerated students.

Agree that Jo Boaler is a piece of work. Read a lengthy scholarly peer-reviewed paper by 2 math professors that debunked her claims. She sems to be the Lucy Calkins of the math educational world.

DP. That SF decision was actually pretty close to the VMPI proposal, and my very clear recollection is that it was the VMPI advocates who were debunked on DCUM.

Reminds me of when elite universities made SATs mandatory again. They discovered test optional policies actually hurt equity.

Years and years of complaints about standardized tests while it actually helped level the playing field for low income students.

What do you think is cheaper? Years and years of travel team, enrichment activities, and other extracurriculars or a few SAT study books?

The algebra changes did not meaningfully improve equity outcomes and in some ways made them worse. That’s why nobody put up a fight about reversing the changes.

Families with resources paid for private tutoring or used summer programs or private schools. Families without those resources were more likely to fall further behind.

This widened class‑based inequities, even if the formal policy treated students the same.

After cutting back severely on access to Algebra 1 because it was not equitable, SFPS now are bringing it back for any students who are prepared.

One wonders how a parental lawsuit filed against SFPS factored into the policy reversal.
