We also have one in public and one in private. It’s not about being willing to pay for one and not the other, it’s about what each one needs and prefers. Our public school kid strongly prefers to continue in public school. We also started them both in public school so it’s not like we chose private for them before they were old enough to weigh in with their own opinion.

I know lots of families with one kid in private school and one kid in public school. Some families switch all their kids when they get to a certain grade level and some make the decision to move one kid because they felt that kid wasn’t being well-served by the public school.

Umm, kids have different needs. Some kids thrive better in smaller classrooms, fewer or no behavioral issues, just a calm environment in general. You have to know this, unless of course, your child IS the behavioral problem.

And not all DCPS schools are bad! Plenty of good elementary schools, and a few middle schools and high schools get great marks and reviews. To be honest, if you are in a good public school in MCPS or DCPS, private is usually better. Here, there are so many hard feelings about that fact.

I think so many people actually are pleased with public so it’s baffling how much $ people are spending on the 60k schools. We just don’t hear from the happy people as often bc..it’s DCUM. Can’t wait to hear all the “it’s horrible” responses. But as both a private and public school teacher, I’m more pleased with mcps.

It depends on the child's needs. There are pro's and con's of both. We had one child in a private due to special needs MCPS wouldn't support or understand for a few years. We may move our youngest in high school due to the lack of stem at our home school. I don't think before that is worth it as the math tracks are different.

Correct. There are some nutjob MCPS defenders here who find it offensive if you acknowledge that in many instances, private is the better option to MCPS.

There is a private school board. Why would we know or care about privates? MCPS doesn't have a lot of school choice. Now there is none.

Parents get so defensive! I see parents posting, asking about choosing a DCPS school or DCPS specialized program vs. private school or asking about private schools in general and the parents are so helpful and thoughtful in their responses. But in this forum, the parents are so nasty and vicious - is it jealousy? What is the reason??
