No, that is total hyberbole.
NU doesn't take that many transfers. Maybe 100 a year? They come from around 100 different colleges.

Just have them go to Emory for a year and then transfer into WashU.

Yeah as a WashU alum, I mentally added the sentience "We will have open slots because of how many people transfer to Northwestern after freshman year." 😝

I'm just wondering why some letters have it and some don't. Is this a common inclusion in rejection letters? Honestly, it seems to be in poor taste.

I think that is just welcoming you to apply again next year.

If I recall correctly from last year there are a number of schools that have that written into their rejection letters.
