My kid got into two Ivies RD, Hopkins and Pomona, Monroe scholar W&M, and several honors college and not offered Echols. That took it out of contention immediately.

That comes off a little desperate to me. UVA doesn’t need to beg for acceptance. That being said, maybe your kid is missing some emails? Ours got Rodman(the echols equivalent for engineering) and they also received 3-4 emails from UVA between Feb and April encouraging days on the lawn as well as inviting to reach out to faculty, and we got an email as parents. UVA had a similar level of post-acceptance engagement as the ivy/elites she got into. Interest but not begging, and minimal swag.

If you want this kind of thing, then you aren't a good fit at UVA or any medium to large state school. The kid of a friend was making noise about choosing Florida over in-state UVA because Florida "loved her more" and my friend was about to lose his mind. Not just because of the money or ranking or reputation, but because the swag-love is a transparent and manipulative marketing gesture and in no way indicative of the college experience at UF. He couldn't believe his kid was falling for it. These schools are not an intimate small liberal arts campus where you dine with your professor after class.

Also, this is my taxpayer money! Good for UVA for not playing stupid games.


I think you missed the most important part here -- older students and faculty from other similarly ranked schools reaching out. This seems so key, and it's happening for the other honors colleges. Echols - nada.

UVA already gave us a calendar of events to prepare for orientation. We attended a virtual meeting with the financial director and there are others with his school and housing.

We signed up in the portal. Make your kid show you the portal.

I prefer information we can use. You can buy tshirts.

Does anyone feel like UVA has just given up on yield? DC got into a couple other honors colleges at “public ivies” and gets so much mail, swag and communication. I’d really love to pay in state tuition, but DC is not convinced and Echols has basically sent one email saying he’s in, but no swag or engagement.
