Equity by pure definition should be that everyone gets what they need to thrive to their fullest potential. Gifted kids deserve equity too — they need rigor, challenge, creativity. But what we’re getting is that if one group gets something that others can’t access, no one gets it at all. That isn’t equity. And no, it isn’t okay.

No, it's not. It's exhausting to hear parents complain about their children missing out on these programs. Perhaps it’s time for an honest conversation about whether they truly belong in the same room as the students who earned their spots.

The only universal way MCPS seems to address GT accross the system at the High School level is more difficult curriculum (AP/IB). Which completely ignores GT students needs for creativity, project based learning, etc.

Offensive on purpose, there? It's inadequate, to be sure. It may have slightly different placement proportions with respect to those demographic characteristics. The underlying mechanism, however inexact, though, is about known differences in academic opportunity, identification difficulty and both interim and final outcomes associated with economic condition.

That it is a lottery instead of robust/well-seated enough to meet all GT need relatively equitably with respect to the needs of other student populations is the real problem, here.

My kid’s MS report card says which of his classes are GT—i think there are like 3 GT classes he is in? I don’t know what that means though

MSDE, the department which oversees and sets rules for school districts in the state, and its G&T advisory council has put out a survey for parents of gifted and talented students in grades 3-12 asking for experiences and opinions on services for gifted kids: https://msde.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5vhIkhzEOJ8BzfM

For folks who have opinions about how MCPS serves gifted kids and how well it aligns with state regulations that require districts to provide appropriate programs and services for gifted and talented students, this is an opportunity to share your input with the state.
