I think it was not so much the substance of what he said--although of course practitioners in any art form are going to be a little touchy about someone (esp. a different performer) saying their field was "dying." But the whole moment had a very ha-ha-ha bro feel to it--sort of yo, why would I ever want to do lame-ass ballet? I am willing to accept that Chalamet was not even intending this tone--maybe just trying to be amusing & get a laugh in a town hall--but the optics sucked.

Most Hollywood actors are, so this is not a huge surprise, but people just thought he was different because of the caliber of roles he's played. They thought he was a Michael B. Jordan, he's actually a young Zach Braff but just a better, more versatile actor.
Yet most people agree with him. If you suggested people on here dress up and go to the opera and ballet you'd be laughed out for being such an out of touch boomer.

I think he gets that though, he certainly was not implying what he does is harder as he comes from a ballet family. But I think that's my point: you take one actor who gives 100s of interviews a year, likely has seen his fair share of ballet and heard about funding issues and how tough it is from his own mom throughout the years (which is why that even popped into his brain at all!) and then makes ONE bad comment, tries to awkwardly take it back, and it takes on a viral life online.
He's made the same comment several times, and it's really not one bad comment. He comes off as arrogant and self-absorbed in all his interviews. He made that comment at a "town hall" that he was doing with Matthew McConaughey for some reason -- it was stupid. He has an annoying personality and he's just finally reached the point of overexposure where that's more obvious to people.

I think it's wild anyone thinks he should have won Best Actor over Michael B. Jordan. MBJ played two roles in a genre defying movie that was both critically acclaimed AND a box office success.
Chalamet played a slight variation on his Bob Dylan performance from last year, in a small movie that few people saw.
Why would Chalamet win the Oscar? Why do people think he was somehow entitled to it? I don't get it. If MBJ didn't get it, I would have given it to Leo or Ethan Hawk first (Hawk's movie was also not seen by anyone but he totally transforms for that role, it's amazing). I haven't seen Secret Agent yet but I bet I like Moura better in it than Chalamet in Marty Supreme. The movie was meh and he's good but the role is just not that big of a deal.

The writing was already on the wall that it “wasn’t his turn.” I have to wonder if his team purposely made the story blow up as an excuse for him not winning the Oscar so that he could “eat some humble pie” and set up a redemption story for the next Oscar cycle.

I don't understand how it's been hyped to such a point. He made one stupid comment, immediately said (because I looked up the whole quote) that he didn't even know why he said that and no disrespect to ballet, AND his own mom is a former ballerina with the New York City Ballet and his grandma and sister also were ballerinas! It seems crazy people are saying it cost him the Oscar and he's now so hated because of it and people are tearing him down for it.
