Analysts have picked this apart and concluded that Meta is spending so much on data centers (with questionable payoff that is at best many years away) that it needs to lay people off in the interim to avoid its profitability taking a severe nosedive.

This. Their product isn't so great and they try to cover that up by saying AI is handling the work so they need to layoff. Eventually companies like Meta will not exist and be replaced by the mega AI brain powered by the mega data center.
