I can’t believe how uninformed and glib the parents are here. Look at what happened in the Midwest. This is a derecho. There will be no ability to get your kids after it passes because the streets will be closed. Obviously, schools must at least close early and the office doesn’t need parents randomly getting kids.

This is when the state needs to get involved. If conditions change by Monday, awesome and the best news. If not, it could be disastrous.

NOAA just increased the threat to part of Maryland to a 4 out of 5 (this is the highest it can be elevated this far out). Over 1” hail, winds over 58 mph, and multiple tornadoes are all possible with this strength storm.

I truly hope ALL the local school systems take this threat very seriously and don’t keep kids in school with the intention of waiting it out. High wind gusts and tornado threats are possible Monday afternoon, and will have to be monitored carefully. Tornadoes can appear in the blink of an eye. Students are more likely to be held inside than released early in that scenario.

Tell your child where they should go in the event they see a tornado form after they leave school. They need to hurry to the nearest solid building and go to an inside room away from windows.

The safest place for kids during a tornado is at school, not walking home or riding a bus or even in their own home alone because their parents couldn’t get off work early.

* SERIOUS severe storm POTENTIAL on Monday *

The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed the area in a level 3 out of 5 risk zone for severe storms on Monday, which is an unusually high level for our region this many days in advance. The exact timing of storms is still to be determined but any time between early afternoon and around sunset is possible. The storms should move through rather quickly but could pack a dangerous punch.

An unusually intense cold front will be passing through and storms along and ahead of it could produce damaging wind gusts, hail and even tornadoes.

As is often the case with potential thunderstorm events, exactly how widespread severe storms are and the places that will get hit hardest are difficult to pinpoint. There’s some possibility the storms don’t reach their potential if clouds and cool air linger on Monday, reducing available energy.
