Norway - your money just doesn’t go that far. So $ that in the US would get you a Marriott level hotel would be like a Hampton Inn in Norway. And the food is largely only OK. But the fjoirds were amazing.

All very expensive, but Iceland is way cheaper to fly to. It probably goes Switzerland then Norway then Iceland in terms of cost, with Switzerland way more than the others. Iceland can be done pretty cheap if you don't do many of the pricier tours.

I'm going on a few trips up to New England. Martha's Vineyard, Maine, Narraganset, and maybe Boston and Providence. I'm considering Ireland or Austria in September.

Iceland. Very other worldly.

I like the previously mentioned Alaska. Do a land visit: Anchorage, Denali and Seward.

Seattle/PNW. Seattle, Olympic NP, Ranier, Cannon Beach

Vancouver/BC. Vancouver, Whistler, Vancouver Island, Victoria

Alberta and Montana. Banff, Jasper, Icefields Parkway and Glacier NP.

You might be a little behind in planning for these though.

Oh, Alaska is great!
I have a friend that did a family rafting trip down the river in Idaho and said it was one of best vacations ever. My family is not sufficiently outdoorsy for it, though.
I also have friends that have done hiking in Wales or Scotland, which also looks great for an outdoorsy family. Or biking in Ireland, which has really good biking trails.
I've also been tempted by the cruises through the fjords in Norway etc -- sort of the European version of the Alaska trip with a lot of overlap but add on the Viking history and the culture differences. I'm not sure if that's too close to Russia, but it's probably fine.

It might stretch past 10 hours travel time, but I'd recommend Alaska.

I am in the exact same boat. Oldest is graduating high school, thought we’d do a big special trip this summer, but I’m completely stuck on where to go. Thought we’d go somewhere in Europe, but flight prices are going up and up now with the price of oil. I’ve always had our summer plans nailed down by January, but I feel completely uninspired and distracted by world events. Looking at domestic trips now.

I'm not usually indecisive but have a high school senior this year and realize trips are going to be more challenging to put together in the future.
Budget is flexible. Prefer flights under 10 hours. Some interest in Seattle / Vancouver but want to explore other options.
Places we've liked: almost all of Western Europe, American SW and SE, etc.
We're active rather than museum types.
