Yeah, that's not even ok. It's ok to not know about the wine, but to get his phone out for a coin toss? Odd at best.

I don't actually think asking which is "better" makes sense. I usually ask something more specific like a PP. Which one is drier, sweeter, etc.

Some of these questions can seem dumb but the right person in any customer-related job has data and anecdotes like you say. That's how we picked our paint color. Was debating and contractor told me the (entirely different) popular neutral that everyone was asking for.

The waiter believes his job is taking the order and delivering the food. It's not.

“Better” is so subjective. There is no correct answer. I typically tell the server the qualities that I am looking for, and ask which one is closer.

you probably followed up your question with, is the chicken or salmon better and then for dessert, is the decaf or regular coffee better?

I went to a pretty nice restaurant tonight, with special expertise in wine. I shared with the waiter that I was debating between two reds , and asked if one might be better. He said that that they were comparable, so he went on his phone and asked Siri to carry out a coin toss. 😳

Is it generational that I thought this was odd? (He was much younger than me)? Was he punting because he had no clue? Was this a fine way to handle my question?
