competitive-entry programs such as governor's school, auditioned fine arts programs, other non-pay-to-play programs that require an application and LOR, help to a degree.

I have absolutely zero direct experience but as a hiring manager for entry level research jobs, when I see names like "premiere research academy" on a resume without an institutional affiliation, I'm not impressed. If you have to tell me it's "premiere" in the name, more often than not, it's not.

Usually the competitive ones (typically free or give FA) are really great. But spending the summer at a program is better than nothing. Educational enrichment is always valuable, and something, like a new project or initiative, may come out of it.

This has been discussed many times on this board. The consensus is they don't directly help. In fac, most schools stress that they don't give an advantage.

But they indirectly help if the program is in a major that DC wants to study, so they have something to write about or a way to show they're serious about the major.

And there's a sense colleges know which ones are competitive to get into and which ones you just sign up for. So there's some who say there's a potential disadvantage for the ones sign up classes, but I don't know how much I agree with that.
