Kids apply ED and EA simultaneously. Counselors send transcripts to EA schools. Students get into ED and EA schools and prefer EA school. Students should withdraw EA apps as they promised. Counselor cannot withdraw student apps.

Then they should have applied ED to the EA school. God damn it. I hate entitled brats who ruin things for everyone else.

Most schools have either EA or ED, not both.

Schools that have both: UVA, Michigan, Chicago, Tulane

Schools that have ED or EA, but not both: just about every other school in the country

Then they shouldn't apply ED to another school if an EA school is their top choice. Ass wipes.

I hope they do that instead of penalizing the schools, which end up hurting kids who have nothing to do with it.

People who do this strategically are just terrible.

Exactly. And also those people who game the systems - pretend FGLI or misleading racial profiles. It is just unfair.

I would think the school would ask for some verification that your financial situation had changed.

I've heard family deliberately hiding assets to pass fin-aid but I thought people who game the systems will be minority, am I wrong. Search similar topics, you'd find lot of situations unfair to people who follow the honor codes.

Do schools (both colleges side and high school) track the individual who does this? This is punishing honest students

ED isn't a legal contract. It could be, if the schools were willing to offer consideration in exchange and to be bound themselves to provide it. But they're not, so it's not. Instead, they just try (very successfully) to mislead applicants into believing it's a legally binding contract and occasionally shoot a few hostages (e.g., Tulane).

Sometimes the aid offer isn't finalized in mid-December, so CCO goes on break and uploads everything else around Jan 2 while families wait for aid.

I know someone who got out of Northwestern ED for Harvard. Better aid.

It is not a legal battle and no one has suggested otherwise.

It can, however, become a problem for the high school if too many students do this. See, e.g., Tulane https://www.insidehighered.com/opinion/views/2025/11/03/collective-punishment-early-decision-edition-opinion

The fact that ED cannot truly be enforced against the student will be the death knell. As long as most comply with the terms of the agreement, it will stick around.
