There are a bunch of ways of implementing paywalls on websites.
Some are really easy to bypass with browser settings. The New Yorker's is one of them. Currently you don't need a gift link, archive whatever to bypass the paywall for the New Yorker.
Navigate to the article you want to read. Then go into the browser settings and disable JavaScript for the individual site "https://www.newyorker.com/". Refresh the page, if needed. Then when you're done reading the article, remove the entry disabling the New Yorker, so the site as a whole will work properly again.
Where you find the settings depends on the browser you're using. For example, on Chrome:
Chrome > Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > JavaScript > Not allowed to use JavaScript
Add
https://www.newyorker.com/
Then remove it when you're done and want the site to return to normal behavior.
