"On grade level" at what school and in what way? How does she score on standardized tests?

Below 75%, not a good idea to try for one of the elites, especially if she's at a school which has provided subpar preparation.

Burke and Field have great theatre, music, and art programs.

I would stick with public unless you have trust funds. Those career aspirations will pay under 6 figures. Save the $ to help launch her once she graduates.

Madeira if you don't mind a commute or are up for boarding. Great swim program, a pond to kayak on, strong theater and arts programs, including some fashion related classes and stagecraft (costume design). Kind, fun, funny kids.

Field. Burke. GDS. Maret. Etc. Cast a wide net and visit them all.

Holton has a great theatre program (3 shows a year plus improv). The music program is great (advanced band/orchestra/choral offerings in addition to regular ones). There's also the PUNCH club that puts on a student-run fashion show every year. There is a pool on campus for swimming. May be too rigorous academically for the on grade level kid, but it might be worth a look given her interests.

Maret has a great arts program but very tough hs admit due to size

If your child is also into academics then NCS could be a great fit. Many of the girls play sports, but it doesn't rule the culture of the school. There are many kind girls that do well in school and have other interests. Also, there are two plays a year coordinate with St. Albans. Chorus program is very strong too.

You mean competitive for admissions, not for school culture I think?

Burke has lots of kids from the Hill and the theater scene is very fun. Some kids do both fall play and winter musical and some just do the musical. There are also occasional opportunities to see a show in DC - they recently had a group of students go to see Stereophonic - and theater electives as class options too.

How were her grades? All of those schools are competitive, GDS exceptionally so.

Our daughter is kind, funny, loves theatre and music and fabric arts. Not athletic other than enjoying swimming and kayaking. On grade level kid - likes to read. To give a sense of her, if I had to guess at what she’ll pursue as a career I’d say child therapist or teacher. We’re on the Hill. What schools would you look into for this kid for 9th grade?
