We used this company for a land tour. They were great (but I agree you could easily do something on your own and I think that would be better than a cruise)
You should search this forum because this question gets asked multiple times per year and there are some threads with very very detailed recommendations.
Do you like being able to do your own thing without crowds? That's the advantage of not doing a cruise. I've done both in Alaska.
I highly preferred doing a land based vacation with a few day in Seward for a wildlife and glacier viewing day cruise. We also did a short guided kayaking excursion there and hiked to a glacier. There's a ton of easy hiking in Alaska.
We spent a couple days in Anchorage, a few days in Seward and a few days in Denali. Highly recommend!
Driving is easy. Buy a copy of The Milepost to know when viewpoints etc. are along the highways.
I’m from Alaska. Please don’t do a cruise only. Maybe do the Kenai fjords cruise to see wildlife.
Stay on the peninsula (Homer or Seward (or Soldotna if you want a central location) and do day trips from there.
Put the TRAiN trip to Denali from anchorage at the beginning or end of your trip.
The real Alaska is not by sea every single day.
Flying all the way out there, do both. We did a week on land (flew into Anchorage, rented a car and drove a loop, Seward, Talkeetna and then Denali, then stopped at the musk osk farm on our way back to Anchorage). Then got on Ruby Princess Cruise - it was fantastic.
Any recommendations for a summer trip to Alaska with two adults and a teen. Are cruises the best way to see things? Any land only trips that are worthwhile? We enjoy beautiful sites, history, museums, and animals. While we enjoy hiking, we can only do mild/moderate hikes due to some health issues.
