The petition shows the BoE what's missing from the proposal. Now they won't be able to dodge the point and say they didn't know what they were voting for when families come to them with problems in the new model.

Why can nobody write a decent petition around this regional program thing? Despite deep opposition, there is no way they are going to get a large number of signatures on a petition like this.

(The timing on this is terrible, too. Why couldn't it have gone out a month or two ago? Asking for this many changes that are this extensive over a 3 week period makes them sound unreasonable and disingenuous... at this point you've got to ask for things that are realistic in the timeframe available, like asking them to commit to some simple but important changes to transportation or local setasides or whatever. Plus just practically speaking, it's too late in the process for a petition like this to make any difference.)

The transportation issues became crystal clear (i.e., pickups for regional programs only at high schools) after this petition went out.

Transportation has been an outstanding question since the beginning of this process. They may have only just confirmed that their plan is to offer extremely limited transportation, but anyone paying attention knew that there was no commitment to adequate and equitable transportation.

And it's not like they can't edit it, either. If you're going to have a laundry-list petition like this and then leave off one of the most important issues, it's just irresponsible.

Was sent to me by someone else so I don't know exactly, but it was written by current MCPS parents who are active in PTA and have been meeting with MCPS staff about concerns with the current plans for the regional model.

Not really. CO staff can always make changes to programs.
